How Do I Backwash a DE Filter?
If your pool has been equipped with a diatomaceous earth filter, eventually you will need to perform a process called “backwashing.” Backwashing is necessary when your DE filter has absorbed the maximum amount of dirt and debris. While it may sound intimidating, the process is simple.
First, shut the pool equipment down. Next, turn your vari-flow valve clockwise to the backwash position. Then, run your hose out to where you would like to disperse the filtered water.
Turn the pool equipment back on; at this point, look at your site glass- you’ll see the water become cloudy. Let the equipment run for about 30 to 60 seconds.
Shut the equipment down again. Then turn the multi-port clockwise to the rinse position. Turn the equipment back on.
Continue to switch the multi-port valve from the backwash to the rinse position until the water in the site glass is clear. Make sure to turn off the equipment before each time you turn the multi-port valve.
After the backwashing cycle is complete, be sure to recoat your vertical grids with fresh diatomaceous earth by slowly pouring scoops through your skimmer to recoat the grid assembly. Pour one pound at a time; the size of your filter will determine how much you pour.
